Copywriting 101 – Polish vodka

This week’s copywriting 101 showcases the work of a creative copywriter who has used just a few words to convey a strong message.

The ad is called simply, Spy.

Clever copywriting from Sydney

The ad is the result of a collaboration between creative ad agency, JayGrey, and Australian vodka company, Vitek Vodka.

According to the agency, the aim was to create a campaign that showed the brand’s heritage and high quality, whilst also standing out from the crowd. Hence the tagline, “Distilled by Peasants, Drunk by Royalty.”

JayGrey came up with the concept for the campaign, a satirical take on the vodka company itself, suggesting they “stick to what they’re good at”, namely producing vodka!

What do you think of this week’s Copywriting 101? Do you think the copywriters have got it right? Leave a comment and let me know.

Top benefits of social media for your business

When it comes to marketing your business, social networking might not be high on your agenda, but if you look at it as a free and comparatively easy tool that can be used alongside other marketing activities, you’ll soon see the benefits.

In fact, if you look at the success of other businesses who use social media, I reckon you’ll be keen to incorporate it into your marketing plan yourself.

Do you ‘like’ social media?

According to a report by marketing software company HubSpot, businesses who utilise social media get more traffic to their website, and ultimately, more leads. The report showed that of the 4000 businesses they questioned:

  • Businesses with 301 to 1,000 Twitter followers had over 5 times more traffic than those with 1 to 25 followers.
  •  Businesses with over 1,000 Twitter followers had over 6 times more traffic than those with 1 to 25 followers.
  •  B2B and B2C businesses with 301 to 1,000 Twitter followers got over 4 times more leads than those with 1 to 25 fans.
  •  B2C business with over 1,000 Twitter got 10 times more leads than those with 1 to 25 fans.

Businesses who use twitter generate more leads

  • Businesses with 501 to 1,000 Facebook fans had 3.5 times more traffic than those with 1 to 25 fans.
  •  Businesses with over 1,000 Facebook fans had 22 times more traffic.
  • B2B businesses with over 1,000 Facebook fans got 6.5 times more leads than those with 1 to 25 fans.
  •  B2C business with over 1,000 Facebook fans got 16 times more leads than those with 1 to 25 fans

Could social media benefit your business?

So as you can see, social media is great for generating website traffic, and increasing leads. But what are the other benefits?

Increased brand awareness

Online networking will help you to spread the word about your brand. The more potential customers see your company name, the more likely they are to remember it in the future.

Reputation management

Social media gives you the opportunity to manage your company’s online reputation. It’s helpful to know what your customers are saying about your products or services. And it gives you a good opportunity to see any negative comments from disgruntled customers and answer them accordingly.

Develop your business’ personality

Using social networks can be a good way for customers to see the human side of your business, rather than dealing with a faceless workforce via email, for example. Social media allows you to show a bit of personality and lets your customers get to know you.

Find new customers

Social media can help you to find customers or affiliates for your business. Search Twitter for people having conversations relating to your industry and you can not only keep up-to-date with the latest developments in your particular area, you can potentially interact with future customers.

Keep abreast of what your competitors are doing

Social media makes it easier than ever to see the conversations your competitors are having, meaning you can keep up with what others in your area are doing and what you should be doing.

How to boost your business with SEO copywriting!

SEO (search engine optimisation) copywriting is important for getting your website seen. But how difficult is it to do?

SEO copywriting…

You’ve got an all-singing all-dancing website promoting your business, you may have even thought about starting a blog. But how do you make sure they’re seen by your potential customers?

Effective SEO copywriting will ensure your web content is picked up by search engines like Google, enabling it to move up the rankings, and come out higher in internet search results.

There are many benefits to effective SEO copywriting

What is SEO copywriting?

Search engine optimisation is the process of improving the visibility of a website in search engines. The higher ranked the website, the more visitors it will receive from the search engine’s users. Simples.

Why is it important?

Research shows that most users only ever click on the top five to ten results, so the higher your website appears the better! Yahoo, MSN and Google account for over 70% of all search engine traffic on the internet, so ensuring your website appears high in search results is really valuable.

Search Engine Optimisation can boost your business

How do I increase my SEO?

For effective SEO copywriting, you need to do six things:

1. Read up on SEO to find out as much as you can about how to implement it. Or if in doubt, have someone else implement it for you.

2. Create an easy to navigate website, with easily viewable links and a site index.

3. Determine what your target keywords are. Use SEO keyword tools to help you.

4. Provide the reader with useful content that gives them the chance to learn about or understand a product, service or opinion. Your content should be well written and should show an understanding and knowledge of the topic.

5. Give your content readability. As important as it is to include keywords in your copy to boost SEO, you should still be writing for the reader first, and the search engines second. Also, search engines have become wise to tricks like repeating a keyword hundreds of time on a page, so don’t go down that route.

6. Social networking, social bookmarking, posting in forums and link exchanges can all help boost your SEO. If you can get authoritative, high ranking websites in your niche to exchange links with you, this can be invaluable. Try using Technorati, Digg, StumbleUpon and other social bookmarking tools on your web pages to bring relevant traffic to your website.

Copywriting 101 – edible advertising

This week’s copywriting 101 comes from the United Arab Emirates, where Land Rover recently launched an innovative copywriting campaign – involving an edible advert with the nutritional value of a cheeseburger. Yes, really.
Land Rover’s copywriting campaign is good enough to eat…

Ad agency Y&R Dubai devised the campaign which saw them sending out a survival guide to 5,000 existing Land Rover customers, explaining the basics for staying alive in the Arabian Desert.

The ad agency says: “We researched every indigenous animal and plant, people could encounter in the Arabian Desert and how they could be used to survive. We studied the topography of the region to guide people to safety.

“We used a reflective packaging similar to army rations, which could be used to signal for help, and bound the book with a metal spiral, which could be used for cooking.

“Finally, we even took an extra step so that in case of emergency, people could always EAT the book. It was made out of edible ink and paper, and it had a nutritional value close to that of a cheeseburger.”

What do you think of an advert you can eat? Leave a comment and let me know!

Facebook timeline for business

As the new Facebook timeline rolls out, it’s important for businesses to look at how they can get the most from it. As discussed in more detail in a previous post, the new timeline can be used to increase customer engagement, get more fans, and ultimately lead to more sales.

Businesses should make the most of Facebook’s timeline

Here are some great, easy ways businesses can maximise results with the new Facebook timeline:

  • Choose a visually-engaging cover photo that showcases your brand – something unique and individual to help people learn more about you and your business. Add a profile photo that scales well as a thumbnail image.
  • Use pinned posts to drive traffic instead of default landing tabs.

Pin posts on Facebook’s timeline

  • Help build your brand by highlighting important posts with a star and adding milestones, such as key moments like when your business was founded.
  • Keep your fans engaged by using a variety of content – text, links, videos, questions and images. However, try to use images more often, as these will maximise engagement.
  • Utilise apps. Use a relevant thumbnail image for each app, with a call to action like “Donate” or “Enter here” to help increase conversions.

Consider using apps on your Facebook timeline

  • Try posting to your timeline at different points of the day and monitor the results to see what is most effective.
  • Pin content which includes links to wherever you’d like your fans to visit, such as your company website or a particular app.
  • Interact with your fans by using private messaging.

Check out my previous post to find out more about how best to use the Facebook timeline to boost your business.

I hope you have found these tips for maximising your Facebook timeline helpful. Do you have any tips of your own? If so leave me a comment and let me know. And remember to share my post on your social networks.

Copywriting 101 – vintage weight loss ads

This week we have some creative copywriting from decades gone by, promoting various diet aids.

If I lie back like this, does it make me look thinner?

From a massager that eliminates fat, to soap that slims you, these ads all use persuasive copywriting to encourage ladies to buy the products advertised, in the hope of achieving a svelte figure. (Note how only women are targeted in the ads, presumably the men making these products are all slim and beautiful themselves).

Apparently this soap will make you thinner AND younger...

And they certainly don’t beat around the bush…

The copywriters for Professor F.J. Kellogg reckon you'll feel 100 times better if you try their weight loss remedy

What do you think of the vintage copywriting? Leave a comment and let me know, and if you like them, why not share them on Facebook, Twitter or LinkedIn?

Secrets of improved social media

You’re already doing the basics on social networks like Twitter, Facebook, Flickr, Pinterest and LinkedIn, but how can you make your use of social media even more effective?

Check out these tips for giving your online networking that extra zing!

Turbo-charge your social networking

Twitter – Tweet more effectively

  • Ask interesting questions to engage potential customers.
  • Listen to what your current clients are saying. If people are tweeting about your business or products, take note. Also take note of what potential clients are tweeting about. Check out your competitors’ followers for an added insight.
  • Respond to tweets, whether they’re positive or negative, as quickly as you can.

Facebook – Improve your engagement on Facebook

  • Acknowledge knew ‘likes’ with a thank you.
  • Provide fresh and interesting content – give your fans something of value. But don’t bombard them.
  • Post frequently (not too frequently, you don’t want to annoy your likers!) but don’t ignore your page for days on end. Subscribers will be expecting regular, fresh content. Stagger the times that you post to reach more fans.

Get sociable with social media

Flickr/Pinterest – Pick your images cleverly

  • Post compelling images on blogs, websites and photo-sharing sites. Research shows that while text is still the first thing that people see on the page, the image is what encourages them to read on.
  • For optimum results, use relevant keywords in your captions and file names when posting pics.

LinkedIn – Use smarter networking to build your connections

  • Join targeted groups to increase your network of relevant connections within your industry or area.
  • Optimise your profile – use relevant keywords to make sure you are more likely to come up in searches. Shout about your business and make sure you include links to your website and blog. Use a profile photo that reflects who you are.
  • Update regularly – one simple way of doing this is by linking existing Twitter/blog feeds to your profile.
